Things to Check Before Buying a Cheap Airbag for Your Gym

Two products that look almost identical on the outside can differ in price by a factor of three, and the difference is explained with vague words like “quality” or “European engineering.” That is not enough to sign a contract on.

If you are running a gym, a trampoline park, or a training facility, an airbag is one of the biggest single investments you will make this year. It is also one of the few pieces of equipment where the wrong choice can hurt. Cheap does not always mean bad, but cheap almost always means something has been removed from the product to hit the price. Your job as a buyer is to find out what.

Here are the seven things worth checking before you sign anything, and what a serious answer looks like in each case.

1. Certifications and Safety Standards

The first question is the easiest one to ask and the hardest one for a cheap supplier to answer. Which safety standard is the airbag certified to, and can you see the certificate?

The current European standard for landing airbags is EN ISO 23659:2022-11. Fire ratings follow the EN 13501-1 classification, where B-s1-d0 is the highest rating a landing airbag realistically achieves. If a supplier says “certified” without giving you a specific standard and a document, walk away. If they give you a certificate that is more than a few years old, ask what has been updated since.

Every Bagjump airbag is manufactured and tested to EN ISO 23659, and the fire rating is B-s1-d0. Those numbers are on the product spec sheet and available on request, not buried in a footnote.

2. Materials and Topsheet Quality

The topsheet is the part of the airbag your athletes land on thousands of times per day. It is also the part where cheap suppliers save the most money. Generic PVC coated fabric looks similar to premium material on the showroom floor, but it wears out in months instead of years, tears more easily, and grips less consistently over time.

Ask two questions: who manufactures the fabric, and what is the weight per square meter? Premium airbags use materials from top tier European suppliers like Heytex, with topsheet weights typically above 900 g per square meter. Cheap airbags often use unbranded fabric between 600 and 750 g, without disclosing the supplier.

The topsheet is not the place to save money. It is the surface your business is built on.

3. Chamber Architecture

The inside of an airbag matters more than the outside. Cheap airbags are often single chamber constructions, which means the entire product depends on one sealed volume of air. If one seam fails, the whole bag deflates. On day one, this is invisible. On day 400, after thousands of landings, it becomes a very expensive problem.

Premium airbags use multi chamber construction, where the interior is divided into several independent sections. If one chamber loses pressure, the others hold. The athlete still lands on a stable surface. The bag keeps working while the damaged section is repaired.

What you need to ask your supplier: How many chambers does the airbag have, how are they separated, and what happens if one fails? If the answer is vague, that is your answer.

4. Repairability

Every airbag will eventually need repair. A shoe with a sharp edge, a piece of debris, a mistake during installation. The question is not whether it happens, it is what happens next.

Cheap airbags are often built to be disposable. The topsheet is bonded in a way that cannot be opened, the chambers are not accessible, and the only repair option is shipping the entire product back to the manufacturer. If the manufacturer is on another continent, that means weeks of downtime and shipping costs that can approach the price of a new bag.

Premium airbags are built to be opened, patched, and closed again by trained staff on site. The materials are stocked, the process is documented, and a hole the size of a coin does not shut down your business for a month.

5. Warranty and Manufacturer Stability

A five year warranty is only worth as much as the company standing behind it. The airbag industry has quietly seen dozens of small suppliers appear and disappear over the last decade, and a warranty from a company that no longer exists is a piece of paper.

A supplier that has been building airbags for over a decade, employs its own engineers, and has an established service network is a very different proposition from a broker reselling generic products under their own label.

6. Installation and Training

An airbag delivered to your door in a crate is not a finished purchase. It needs to be installed correctly, connected to the right blower, tested at the correct pressure, and matched to the space and use case. Your staff needs to know how to operate it, how to inspect it daily, how to store it if it is not permanent, and what to do if something is wrong.

Cheap airbags often arrive with a printed manual and nothing else. Premium suppliers include installation, staff training, and ongoing technical support as part of the deal. The difference between an airbag operated correctly and one operated incorrectly is significant, and it shows up in athlete safety, product lifespan, and insurance conversations.

7. Total Cost of Ownership Over Five Years

This is where the cheap airbag calculation falls apart, and it is also the calculation most first time buyers never run.

The purchase price is one number. The full cost over five years includes electricity for the blower, spare parts, repairs, downtime when the bag is out of service, replacement of components that wear out faster than expected, and, in the worst case, complete replacement of the product before the five year mark.

A cheap airbag can easily cost more over five years than a premium one, once you add up the repairs, the downtime, and the earlier than expected replacement. (Yes, we did the calculation.) A premium airbag is built to still be running at year seven, year eight, and beyond, with predictable maintenance and no surprises.

An airbag is not a piece of decoration. It is the surface every athlete in your gym trusts with their body, every day, for years. The decision to save 30 percent on the purchase price by choosing a cheaper option is a decision that shows up later, in ways that are much harder to reverse.
