The 10 Biggest Ski Resorts and Training Grounds in North America

From endless mountain trails to Bagjump airbags, these 10 resorts belong on your winter bucket list.

Skiing and fresh snow are just a match made in heaven. No matter if you’re a seasoned pro or taking your first turns, some winter resorts make every run an absolute blast. What’s not to love?

For this week’s blog post, we want to look at the largest ski resorts and progression grounds across the continent. Whether you love deep bowls, wide groomers, or high-flying terrain parks, these spots offer terrain that seems to stretch forever.

We love supporting the winter sports community, and while not all of these resorts feature our airbags, we are thrilled to showcase these world-class mountain playgrounds.

Here are 10 of the best ski resorts and training centers in North America (according to our research.)

1. Whistler Blackcomb

  • Location: Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

  • Size: Around 8,171 acres of skiable terrain

Covering two huge connected mountains, Whistler Blackcomb is an absolute legend in the skiing world. The famous Peak 2 Peak gondola lets you hop between both peaks in just minutes, giving you easy access to deep powder bowls, steep chutes, and world-famous terrain parks. The resort usually opens in late November and keeps the lifts spinning all the way through May, with summer glacier camps continuing right into July.

Some of Whistler Blackcomb’s park zones regularly integrate Bagjump Snow Landing Airbags during training events, camp sessions, and progression days. They offer riders a soft surface to practice new flips and spins before taking them to hardpack snow. Because of this, it is not uncommon to see from time to time one or another pro.

2. Powder Mountain

  • Location: Eden, Utah, USA

  • Size: Around 8,464 acres of total terrain

If you love wide-open spaces and having plenty of room to ski, Powder Mountain is the place to be. It is the largest ski area in North America by land size, so you never have to worry about feeling crowded. You get miles of soft snow, fun tree trails, and huge open bowls to explore all day long. One of the best things about Powder Mountain is that they limit how many lift tickets they sell each day. This means you get to spend your time skiing down the mountain rather than standing in long lines. Their winter season usually begins in early December and goes through April. When you visit, you can look forward to quiet trails, fun snowcat rides into deeper powder, and a super relaxed vibe from start to finish.

3. Park City Mountain Resort

  • Location: Park City, Utah, USA

  • Size: Around 7,300 acres of skiable terrain

If you want a resort that has it all and is easy to get to, Park City is a top pick. It is the largest lift-serviced ski resort in the United States, located just a short drive from the Salt Lake City airport. The ski season runs from mid-November through mid-April. On the mountain, you will find hundreds of smooth groomed trails, terrain parks for all skill levels, and cool historic mining buildings scattered along the slopes. One of the fun things about skiing here is that you can ride all the way down into town to grab lunch, coffee, or a hot chocolate right off the lift.

4. Mt. Hood Timberline & Wy’East Campus

  • Location: Mount Hood, Oregon, USA

  • Size: Around 1,415 acres of skiable terrain

Mt. Hood is home to Timberline Lodge, a legendary spot that has the longest ski season in North America. Thanks to the Palmer Glacier, people can actually ski and snowboard here all summer long! It is the main place where top pros, summer campers, and snow lovers go when the weather warms up. You get to enjoy summer snow, high-altitude terrain parks, and historic mountain views.

To help riders learn new tricks without fear, the campus uses a massive 60′ x 60′ Bagjump Custom Landing Airbag. Set up right on the glacier, this giant airbag matches the exact shape of a real landing. It gives skiers and snowboarders a big, soft cushion when they bail, making it super easy to try wild new flips and spins without a single worry!

5. Palisades Tahoe

  • Location: Olympic Valley, California, USA

  • Size: Around 6,000 acres of skiable terrain

Palisades Tahoe hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics, and it is still one of the most exciting places to ride today. A modern base-to-base gondola connects its two main mountain areas, Palisades and Alpine Meadows, making it easy to explore both in one day. Opening in late November and often running well into May, the resort is famous for its steep mountain faces, wide groomers, and beautiful views of Lake Tahoe. You can expect high-speed lifts, huge bowl skiing, and a lively village at the bottom filled with places to relax and eat.

6. Woodward Copper

  • Location: Summit County, Colorado, USA

  • Size: Around 2,507 acres of skiable terrain

Riders come here to enjoy custom terrain parks, tubing lanes, trampolines, and indoor launch ramps.

Safety and practice go hand in hand here with their custom Bagjump setup. Out in the snow, Woodward uses a Bagjump airbag right on the jump landings so you can practice big tricks and ride away clean.
